Joanne Welcomes 2% Fall In Crime
Joanne McCartney, London Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, today welcomed the British Crime Survey (BCS) figures which showed there was a 2% fall in crime in London between 2008/9 & 2009/10.
Joanne McCartney, London Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, said: "I am delighted that crime in London continues to fall. It appears that Britain was not broken after all.”
“There is no doubt that this is a direct result of the increased investment in policing over the last 10 years. Under Mayor Livingstone the police budget went from £2bn to £3bn, police number went from 26,000 to 31,000 and crime dropped by over 20% between 2002/3 and 2007/8.”
“However, with budget cuts looming Mayor Johnson must do everything he can to ensure that police have the number of officers they need to continue to bear down on crime in the Capital.”
The BCS figures show that crime is falling by 2% in London, but by 8% across England & Wales; Violence against the person has remained stable in London, but is down 4% across England & Wales: And, sexual offences are up 6% in England and Wales, but a staggering 14% in London.
Joanne McCartney, London Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, said: “While a 2% fall in crime is welcome, I am worried about the 14% rise in sexual offences that we have seen over the past year. I have previously called for extra resources to be put in place to investigate rape and I hope that Mayor Johnson can redouble his efforts in this area.”
