Joanne Seeks Assurances Over Future Of Piccadilly Line
Following press reports that the Government was planning to cut funding for the upgrade to the Piccadilly Line, Joanne McCartney, London Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, has written to Peter Hendy, TfL Commissioner, to seek assurances that the work will go ahead.
Joanne McCartney, London Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, said: "I have already raised concerns, with the Mayor & TfL, that the upgrade to the Piccadilly line would not be completed by 2014 as planned. However it now looks like the Coalition Government is planning to drastically cut funding to London’s transport projects.”
The Crossrail project will mean an additional 1.5million people will be within 1 hours travelling time of central London. Once in central London many passengers will need to change to the tube in order to continue their journey. The Piccadilly Line Upgrade will increase the capacity of the line by 24% and decrease journey times by 19%.
Joanne McCartney, London Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, said: “The Piccadilly Line is already heavily congested and will not be able to cope with the extra passenger numbers, especially as population is expected to rise by 1.3m, over the next 20 years, and Crossrail.
“Without the upgrade works, which will increase capacity by 24%, residents of Enfield & Haringey will find it increasingly difficult to make the journey to and from central London, as we do not have the same number of transport options as those who live in inner London.”
“I have written to Peter Hendy, TfL Commissioner, to seek assurances that the work will go ahead. I hope that the Government will not take away our tube upgrades as the price for funding Crossrail.”
